Adding instructions for MCP-enabled AI agents

Updated today

When your AI agent is connected to an MCP server, it’s important to give the agent clear instructions on how to use it. These instructions go into the Instructions field in the agent’s settings.

For general tips on writing good instructions, see Writing effective Role and Instructions for the AI agent.

Example for HubSpot MCP server

If your agent is connected to HubSpot and you want them to work with lead information, you could write:

Be friendly, polite, and professional. Answer questions clearly and accurately. If a question is outside DialLink’s services, say: “I'm here to help with DialLink-related questions only. Let me connect you with the right team.” Never provide personal opinions or legal/medical advice.
When a call comes from a new contact, ask for their name and key details, then create a lead in HubSpot using the connected MCP server. If the caller is an existing contact, review their HubSpot record to see active deals, status, and recent activities before continuing the conversation. When transferring a call, provide the receiving team member with relevant HubSpot details so they have full context.

By updating this field, you make sure the agent’s behavior matches your business needs and uses the MCP server effectively.
