CNAM (Caller ID) registration: Overview

CNAM (Caller ID) is the business name that may appear on a recipient's device when you call a US and Canada phone number. This article explains how CNAM works, what affects how it's displayed, and what you need to enable it in DialLink.

What is CNAM (Caller ID)?

CNAM (Caller Name) is a caller ID feature used by US carriers. It lets your business name appear next to your phone number when you make outbound calls, so recipients know who's calling before they answer.

CNAM display depends on carrier databases and the recipient's device, so it can vary from call to call.

Important:

  • CNAM display is not guaranteed on every call

  • Different carriers may display CNAM differently

  • Some devices or apps may not display CNAM at all

When is CNAM displayed?

Your business name may appear on outbound calls when both of these conditions are met:

  • You call from a US and Canada phone number with a completed company/business profile registration.

Even when both conditions are met, the receiving carrier decides how, and whether, the name is shown.

What you need to register CNAM

Company/business profile

CNAM requires a registered company/business profile in DialLink. Your profile validates your business identity, so carriers can confirm the name you want to display. To learn how to register, see Company/business profile registration.

Caller ID name requirements

Your caller ID name must:

  • Be 15 characters or fewer, including spaces.

  • Use only letters (A-Z, a-z), numbers (0-9), periods (.), commas (,), and spaces.

  • Contain no other special characters, such as "+" or "&".

  • Clearly relate to your business name or the name of the business contact in your US carrier registration. Requests with no visible connection are rejected.

Phone numbers you can use with CNAM

You can assign CNAM to both local and toll-free US numbers, including numbers you've ported to DialLink.

CNAM registration fees

There are no fees for setting up CNAM in DialLink.
