Phone extensions: Overview

What is a phone extension?

A phone extension is a short numeric code, usually a few digits, assigned to a specific user, team, or department. Callers enter the extension using their keypad to be routed directly to the right destination, without navigating a full menu.

Phone extensions are typically added to the end of your main business phone line.

For example: +1 (941) 487-0938 x356.

How to use phone extensions

One of the most common use cases is assigning an extension to a user or team and sharing the direct number with callers. This lets them bypass the auto-receptionist or phone menu and reach the right person or department immediately.

Alternatively, if you use an auto-receptionist or IVR menu, you can let callers know which extension to dial to reach different people or departments once they hear the options.

What entities a phone extension can be assign for?

In DialLink, you can assign an extension to the following entities:

  • User

  • Auto-receptionist

  • Ring group

  • Call queue

  • AI voice agent
